Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
Michigan
The goal of www.uppermichigan.us is to bring historical writings from the early days of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Many of the early pioneers of the UP were of a different breed. The UP is a harsh environment and it took a special class of people to live in that land. Many early pioneers came for the opportunities offered by the mining industry Iron ore and Copper was abundant in the UP. ![]()
In the early days the UP of Michigan was considered a desolate place. The UP was given to Michigan as a result of the Toledo War. Most Michiganders were offended by the prospect of giving Toledo to Ohio in exchange for the UP. Michiganders now know the truth the natural beauty and resources that the UP offers are immense. ![]()
We are proud to provide these letters and writings of the early pioneers of the UP much of the information provided here is basically lost, the books that contain these articles have been discarded or put into storage by libraries. I imagine the interest in old stories of pioneers is lost to most of the population, but to a select few these stories are a fascination. The truth be told some of the information will not be of interest to all but some parts are extremely interesting and the historical value of the stories written by the people that were there is immense. ![]()
